My name is Candis Houston, and I am an educator running for Texas House of Representatives District 142.
As a parent and a former business educator with 17 years in the classroom, I have a deep commitment to public education. In my work as an Aldine ISD teacher for 13 years, I taught the next generation of small business owners and community leaders in Houston. This is a privilege and a responsibility I took very seriously as an educator.
My mother worked three jobs to help put me and my siblings through school and instilled in us the values of hard work and sacrifice. As a single mother myself, I’m working to put my own two daughters (and public school graduates) through college. At one point, I worked three jobs — Aldine ISD teacher, Aldine AFT union president and a server at Pappadeaux Restaurant—to provide for my family and to pay down my student loans. I understand the needs of working families and helping working Texans is a priority for me.
As president of my local teachers union, Aldine AFT, I stand up every day for the working families of Houston. Accordingly, I know that Texas school employees — from teachers to bus drivers to food service workers and beyond — deserve our gratitude and our respect for putting their lives on the line during the COVID-19 pandemic to teach our children and keep them safe.
I am a proud graduate of the Texas educational system. I have a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Prairie View A&M University, a graduate of Tyler Junior College (AA-Business), and the University of Texas at Tyler (B.B.A.-Accounting).
My faith is my foundation. In Houston, I attend New Life Tabernacle Church of God In Christ, and I am active in my church, serving as assistant superintendent of my church's education department. I let God lead my life, and I have prayerfully looked to God to guide me in my public service journey.
